Chapter 23
âThis could be a huge breakthrough,â said Dani, looking around the room at the members of the National Crime Agency who had gathered.
This day was stretching interminably on and she was fighting off exhaustion, running on adrenaline alone. It was now late evening and she was at the headquarters in London, in a briefing room with several of the investigators from the Hamilton enquiry, including the lead, Craig Rayburn.
âItâs got the potential to be a media circus,â said Craig. âIt might also just be a play by Hamilton to get some coverage and relevancy. Weâve kept whatâs been happening under wraps so far for the good of the families. This could push it all into the limelight. We all remember Hindley, donât we? Both times?â
There was a murmur of agreement around the room.
âIt was on every television station and on the front of every newspaper in the country, and as far as Iâm aware, it never led to anything except a rise in her profile. Is that really what we want?â
âI believe him,â said Dani, looking at each of them in turn. âI really do. And trust me, if anyone knows how Hamilton can lie, itâs me. Somethingâs changed recently. I wonât pretend I know exactly what it is, but when I saw him, before the hospital, he was uncomfortable, his eyes flitting around the room, nervous. It was like he was frightened. I couldnât place it then, but Iâm sure of it now. Then heâs attacked with intent to kill. Somethingâs happened in there and he wants to do a deal. Heâs only got one throw of the dice and heâll know that. If he doesnât do as he says, then heâs never going to leave that prison again and he knows it.â
Dani was speaking with passion. She was excited to be part of such a significant potential development, but she was only too aware that many people would be reluctant to see Hamilton outside of the prison at all â herself included.
The information she had about the various plans had been gained illegally and she dearly wanted to share it, without putting herself and Hamiltonâs messenger-guard in prison.
There were more murmurs around the room before Craig spoke up again.
âBut what does he really think heâs going to get out of this?â he asked, not to Dani specifically, but to all the people in the room. âThereâs no way that heâs getting any years cut off his sentence â he knows heâs never getting out. Showing us bodies would, if anything, lead to more convictions and a longer sentence.â
âConfession?â said an officer Dani didnât recognise. âForgiveness or absolution? He wouldnât be the first to do it for that. Heâs never getting out anyway, so whatâs he got to lose?â
Dani didnât comment, because sheâd been wondering the very same thing. What did Hamilton get out of this?
Yes, he got a day trip out of prison and that might be Plan A, and yes, he might end up with some
