Chapter 23

‘This could be a huge breakthrough,’ said Dani, looking around the room at the members of the National Crime Agency who had gathered.

This day was stretching interminably on and she was fighting off exhaustion, running on adrenaline alone. It was now late evening and she was at the headquarters in London, in a briefing room with several of the investigators from the Hamilton enquiry, including the lead, Craig Rayburn.

‘It’s got the potential to be a media circus,’ said Craig. ‘It might also just be a play by Hamilton to get some coverage and relevancy. We’ve kept what’s been happening under wraps so far for the good of the families. This could push it all into the limelight. We all remember Hindley, don’t we? Both times?’

There was a murmur of agreement around the room.

‘It was on every television station and on the front of every newspaper in the country, and as far as I’m aware, it never led to anything except a rise in her profile. Is that really what we want?’

‘I believe him,’ said Dani, looking at each of them in turn. ‘I really do. And trust me, if anyone knows how Hamilton can lie, it’s me. Something’s changed recently. I won’t pretend I know exactly what it is, but when I saw him, before the hospital, he was uncomfortable, his eyes flitting around the room, nervous. It was like he was frightened. I couldn’t place it then, but I’m sure of it now. Then he’s attacked with intent to kill. Something’s happened in there and he wants to do a deal. He’s only got one throw of the dice and he’ll know that. If he doesn’t do as he says, then he’s never going to leave that prison again and he knows it.’

Dani was speaking with passion. She was excited to be part of such a significant potential development, but she was only too aware that many people would be reluctant to see Hamilton outside of the prison at all – herself included.

The information she had about the various plans had been gained illegally and she dearly wanted to share it, without putting herself and Hamilton’s messenger-guard in prison.

There were more murmurs around the room before Craig spoke up again.

‘But what does he really think he’s going to get out of this?’ he asked, not to Dani specifically, but to all the people in the room. ‘There’s no way that he’s getting any years cut off his sentence – he knows he’s never getting out. Showing us bodies would, if anything, lead to more convictions and a longer sentence.’

‘Confession?’ said an officer Dani didn’t recognise. ‘Forgiveness or absolution? He wouldn’t be the first to do it for that. He’s never getting out anyway, so what’s he got to lose?’

Dani didn’t comment, because she’d been wondering the very same thing. What did Hamilton get out of this?

Yes, he got a day trip out of prison and that might be Plan A, and yes, he might end up with some
